Virus at the Cheap Motel

Ok, I admit the title sounds funny, but I assure you I’m talking about a computer virus. Here’s what happened. On a car trip to New York, I decided to stop off at a “cheap motel” in Pennsylvania. 30 dollars a night, nothing fancy, but they did have free wifi. So I logged on to the wifi, and used skype to save on the cell bill. Little did I know my computer was being hacked. Apparently the wifi connection I was on had, to be honest I don’t know what you call it, but somehow somebody in the motel was able to see that I was on their network and they were attempting to log into my computer without my knowledge. They succeeded, cracked my password, got in, took over my computer. I even saw my mouse move on it’s own, and saw it click on a .exe file and that was that. Next thing I see is a bar saying “downloading”. Downloading what, I don’t know, but I assumed it was my computer files, and that’s when I decided to close my computer. But the computer didn’t go to sleep when I closed it, so I tried to turn it off. The shut down was grey out. I couldn’t even click on it. I turned it over and took out the battery, and of course it shut down then. About 5 minutes later, I put the battery back in and started it back up, and when I went to start it, a nice little screen came up saying “Thanks for the information”. I was hacked. And it was MY FAULT.

This irritated me, of course. The motel I was staying at probably had about 50-60 rooms and there was no way to tell who did it. So I closed my computer back up, got in my car, and headed to the Best Buy across the street. It was about 6pm, so I was lucky on my timing and I talked to the geek squad  and they went to work on my computer. They of course fixed it, but what they explained to me was the the beginning of my antivirus knowledge.

They told me, I of course didn’t have real time anti virus protection, and I didn’t have a firewall set up. Firewall, I asked? YES. Firewalls stop any incoming and outgoing connections that you have not authorized. He showed me how it works what to approve and not approve, and he showed me the ins and outs of the virus program. I did have something I am quite proud of though. I had a back up of all my data. Not that it was much. But it had the programs I like and what not, so putting my computer back together was easier.

After about 3 hours and Best Buy was closing I went back to my motel. And logged back on to the wifi they had, and sure enough about 20 minutes after I logged back on, I got a notice from my firewall app asking me to authorize the incoming anonymous user wanting to connect to my machine….I just sat there and was amazed. I couldn’t believe they tried it again…actually yes I could, but I loved that I was prepared this time, and I simply said “do not authorize”, and that was that. Little bit later another connection came in trying to gain access to my machine, but Spyware Doctor let me know and I blocked them again. I loved it. Nothing else came in after that, and I logged in all my online accounts and changed the passwords I had, figuring “they” might have gotten them, and I was all good.

Imagine if that was my main computer and all my personal information and financial information was on there!!!!! I can’t! People anyone can gain access to your computer unless you stop them. If they do get in, they can place keyloggers and anything else they want…unless you stop them. You need real time protection. And you get that from a proven firewall software and a proven antivirus, spyware removal application. And I’ve tried many, and I’m never as satisfied as I am with Spyware Doctor. This happened to me almost 6 years ago, and I’ve never received a virus from a cheap motel , or anywhere for that matter since!

AntiVirus 360

AntiVirus 360

The Antivirus 360 program is completely dependent on the Vundo Trojan. A Trojan that takes advantage of security holes and backdoors in browser java programs that haven’t been updated with the latest security patches, and it’s main function is to show pop ups of any advertisement at random times whether you’re on the internet or not.

What is AntiVirus 360? It’s a program that acts or mimics what a typical virus protection program would do. While you are browsing the internet or working on a program in your computer, the Vundo Trojan will cause a pop up window to appear and claim that you have a security threat. These are false threats, and infections, however the trojan’s  main goal is to scare you into thinking they are true and will continue to constantly flash more and more pop up windows claiming false threats prompting you to click on a link to get rid of them. What you are actually doing when you click the link is downloading a fake antivirus and malware remover…the “Antivirus 360″ Program. Once downloaded it will immediately start up and start to scan your computer. When finished it will give you a list of files on your computer that are infected. However, these files are not really infected. AntiVirus 360 just threw a bunch of random files and system files in the screen to scare you, and tells you the only option you have to get rid of these files is to buy the full version of the program. Problem is the only virus or malware on your computer is the popup generator Vundo Trojan and the program Antivirus 360 program you just downloaded.

If you choose to ignore the upgrade “calling” of AntiVirus 360, the Vundo Trojan will begin to work overtime, constantly barraging you with pop up windows over and over and over again making it so you can’t even see what you’re working on in your computer. The so called warnings will even tell you some of your files are being downloaded to unknown servers, so you panic even more. What’s even more dangerous are the files it’s claiming are infected are system files. And if you pay to get the full version of the software and click the button to delete these files you are actually going to be deleting necessary system files that allow your computer to function rendering your computer unusable.

Now if you’ve downloaded the full version of AntiVirus 360 then you’re seeing this posting too late. Chances are you’ve already deleted precious system files and your computer won’t start up / work, and you’re seeing this posting on someone else’s computer. For you it just might be in your best interest to take your computer to a professional and save any files that need saving and reinstall your computer system. But if you haven’t downloaded the full version yet then you can end the madness of AntiVirus 360 and the curse of the Vundo Trojan in about 10 minutes, and absolutely free.

What is Conficker?

What is Conficker?
Conficker or sometimes referred to as Conflicker, Downadup, or Kido, and is one of the most amazing worms to enter into the world of pc viruses. Here’s why. It hasn’t shown it’s true purpose…YET. Right now all anyone knows about Conficker (conflicker) is that it has the ability to find, figure out, and/or decrypt your passwords. It has the ability to immediately attach itself to external hard drives as well. Why is this important to know? Because of updates.

Security updates from Windows come out after a security hole has been found. Once Microsoft figures out how to plug the hole it issues an update. And that’s great, but conficker thought of this already. And so it hides itself anywhere it can write it’s code to. Such as an external hard drive. Now maybe you have the update, but that doesn’t matter since conficker is still there hooked up to an external hd, or usb flash drive just waiting. Now take that flash drive anywhere where the security hole is not patched up and conficker can do it’s thing again. Such as send your passwords, or data to any place it wants, self update itself to further exploit new holes in security that Microsoft hasn’t figured out yet. Now you’ve just transferred conficker to another computer, plus when you take your external hd or flash drive back home, and plug it in, not worried because you have the latest security update, conflicker sits back and goes to work again on your computer because it self updated itself and now found a way around your computer again, doing as it pleases. BUT WHAT IS IT DOING? That very question is frustrating many security experts!

This worms has spread to well over 11 million PC’s, business and personal computers, theoretically it will grow to over 350 million pcs. Why? Because people are not updating with the latest security patch. And in all reality there will always be a computer out there that is not completely patched up. So even if all the security patches on every computer in the world, except one is updated, if conflicker can find that one computer it can self update itself, and when you bring that usb hard drive back to your computer the cycle starts over.

Technically speaking, the conflicker (conficker) worm hasn’t really caused any damage yet, it’s just keeps spreading, and spreading, and spreading some more, awaiting further commands for what could be described as the “big attack”. As long as there are unprotected computers out there, the worm will never stop.

How does conficker discover your passwords? That’s the easy part. People, far and in-between, rarely use secure passwords. Usually it’s their dogs name, a birthday, family member name, something very very easy to figure out. Once conficker is in your system it starts searching your computer, through it’s data, discovering names, bdays, events, and so forth. It then applies those names as potential passwords and goes to work, and it’s sad to say, but usually the worm does it’s job very effectively and gets the password. So even though, right now,  Conficker hasn’t done any serious damage, it doesn’t mean it’s not coming, for all anyone really knows, it may be doing something that the security experts just haven’t figured out yet. That’s what’s so scary about conflicker.

You may say “How do I get rid of conficker once and for all off my computer and never allow it to return?” This particular worm may take more than a spyware blockers or anti virus program to begin with to get rid of it. But, there are ways…FREE WAYS. And it’s easier then you think, and I’ll show you how.
